About Dublin City…

Dublin is a beautiful historic city built on the banks of the river Liffey in the Republic of Ireland. Dublin can be traced back to a viking settlement and there are historic sites and tours that proudly show the origins of the the city.

The currency used in the Republic of Ireland is the Euro (€), although English, Scottish and Northern Ireland Notes are accepted in some places. There are also many banks and bureau de change’s around the city, including in travel agents.

Banks in Dublin usually open from 10am to 4pm, Mon to Fri, although most open until 5pm on Thursdays.

Post Offices are usually open from 9am to 5pm.

Most shops in the city open every day from 9am to 6pm, except on Thursday, which is late night shopping and open until 8pm, and on Sunday when they only open from 12pm to 6pm. It must be noted though, that not all shops open on Sunday.

The best methods of transport in the city are buses, which service most of the city. Trains don’t service as much of the city but are good (especially the DART) if they go to your destination.

Dublin also has a modern tram system called ‘The Luas’ which services the city.

Taxi’s are also very easy to get in the city, though can be much more expensive.

Dublin Airport is serviced by a regular bus service which will bring you to the city centre.

Fáilte – this means Welcome in Irish and during your stay in Dublin, Ireland you will find this word everywhere as we are a very warm and welcoming nation of people.

English is the main language always spoken in Ireland, however we do have our very own Gaelic language and as a nation we like to use it as well as English in at least some signage throughout our country.

Fáilte (welcome) you will find written at the entrance to many public buildings, restraunts and shops, maybe on a sign, door or perhaps on the floor as you enter, but the most important message is that in Ireland we welcome you.

On toilet doors you may find the words; Fir which means Men and Mná which means Women, but often they have both English and Irish language or male/female symbols.

It is very un-likely that anyone will speak to you in the street or a shop in Gaelic, everyone uses English. Only about 10,000 people use it as their first spoken language and they are predominantly in smaller rural communities on the west coast of Ireland.

You will also find that large worldwide company brands use Gaelic in their signs around Ireland. Companies such as McDonalds use the Irish welcome Fáilte as they integrate thie retraunts within our culture. You may find the same use of two languages in your country too.

During your stay with us we will teach you some of the basic words of Irish just for fun, we do this as many past students have told us that they enjoyed this too.

We have found that our students have chosen English courses in Ireland because they are interested in our culture, and we certainly are pleased to teach them more about it. We arrange trips to various cultural places of interest including the Dáil Éireann (The Irish Parliament building) and other historic buildings and places.

You can find many positive references to our Irish language and cultural education from past students who have visited and learnt on our English courses in Ireland within our testimonials pages.

When you choose The Bristow School in Ireland to learn English, be prepared to enjoy your course, be prepared to have fun learning, and be prepared to go home at the end with a good understanding of English and a few words from the Irish language too.

Contact us now to learn more and book your English Course in Ireland.

We look forward to saying Fáilte when you arrive!

At the English Language Institute Ireland we like to have fun whilst learning.

We encourage great team building amongst our students which in turn helps them to learn the English language easier, faster and it is much more enjoyable.

Part of our team building is Irish Dancing, singing traditional songs, (in English) and learning how to play traditional Irish instruments like the Bodhrain.

Most of our students know the world famous Irish dancing stage show ‘Riverdance’.
The show has toured the world so many times and so nearly every new group of students who visit us ask about the now famous dance routines.

We take the approach of ‘lets not just talk about it, lets all have a go!’

Many of our teachers are keen Irish dancers and singers so in just a few minutes we show you the very basics and whilst you are leaning the dance moves, your English is steadily improving in a fun and enjoyable way.

If you are keen to learn, we introduce traditional song and dance to our students. It is really just for fun and helps students to work together before their afternoon activities. We also love to sing and teach our students traditional songs.

We do this perhaps twice or three times a week with our Juniors. Junior Summer Students usually have a ceili night (group dance), so we go through some steps and group movements so as they will know what to expect on the night of the ceili, which takes place at no extra cost to the student.

We also arrange Bodhrain, ( a traditional Irish drum ), lessons for our students which is a great way for students to explore their musical talents.

To see how popular these lessons are, read our Testimonials page’s, as many past students say this was one of the best things that they will always remember.

We cannot promise to make you the next star of Riverdance, or to teach you to play in a traditional Irish Band but we will certainly show you the basics and you will have so much fun learning some dance steps, immersing in our Culture and expanding your English all at the same time.
